FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick vowed to fight for all three titles his team is in the race for after moving a point clear at the top of the La Liga table via thrashing Real Sociedad 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The Catalans went into the fixture trailing leaders Atletico Madrid by two points, after Real Madrid fluffed its lines with a surprise 2-1 defeat to Real Betis on Saturday night.
Then on 17 minutes, there was a major plot twist after Aritz Elustondo hacked down a Dani Olmo that was clean through on goal, which opened the floodgates for two Barca goals in each half.
Despite Barca finally being back on top of the league in recent weeks, and now leading by a point and not just goal difference, Flick insisted that “it is not the time to talk about titles”.
“The objective has to be the next game. We are going to fight for the three titles and at first nobody expected it. That’s what we want, to fight for the three titles,” Flick stated, while adding that although he doesn’t “look much beyond the next game”, he’s “happy with the point we’re at”.
Scoring 124 goals in 40 games across all competitions thus far, Barca always likes “to play offensively” and “as much as possible in attack” according to Flick.
With Gerard Martin and Marc Casado getting on the scoresheet for the first time in their senior careers, he wants everyone to have “a thirst to score as many goals as possible”.
Amid another clean sheet being kept, though, Flick said that the Blaugrana “defended better than in the last few games” while “nothing surprises me about these players anymore”.
“I’m not surprised at all with this team. After the game against Atletico, in December, I said that we played very well despite the defeat. When we play like this there are many possibilities,” Flick went on.
It was that loss that of course left Barca six points behind after previously leading the pack by the same margin themselves.
Results towards the end of November and December are better off forgotten, but a side that seems to have just the right mix of youth and experience might be peaking at just the right time of the campaign.
