Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours is still shockingly successful to this day. The half-century-old recording is not just present on a Billboard chart from time to time — it usually finds space on several at once. At the moment, it is a top 40 win once more on what is often considered the most important albums ranking in the U.S.
This week has turned out to be a big one for Fleetwood Mac, and not just because of how Rumours is performing. The group doubles up on the Billboard 200, as another well-loved collection returns.
Greatest Hits by Fleetwood Mac Returns to the Billboard 200
Fleetwood Mac’s Greatest Hits returns to the Billboard 200 this week. The compilation narrowly manages to find space on the list, as it reenters Billboard’s ranking of the most-consumed albums in the U.S. at No. 199 — in second-to-last place. Only Swimming by Mac Miller ranks lower.
Streaming Drives Fleetwood Mac’s Greatest Hits
In the past tracking frame, Fleetwood Mac’s Greatest Hits moved just under 8,200 equivalent units, according to Luminate. That sum is made up almost entirely of streams, as the collection sold fewer than 800 copies.
It’s not unusual for compilations to perform well on streaming sites like Spotify and Apple Music, especially from legacy acts. These days, those projects have become the go-to way for millions of people to access the music they love when they want to hear a favorite from a beloved band or singer.
Rumours Continues Its Chart Run
Greatest Hits is not the only Fleetwood Mac album on the Billboard 200 this week. As it reappears, Rumours steps up just one space. This time around, it settles at No. 30 — an incredible placement for an album that was released decades ago.
Rumours Outperforms Greatest Hits
In the past tracking period, Rumours outperformed Fleetwood Mac’s Greatest Hits more than twice over. The Grammy winner for Album of the Year shifted 19,000 equivalent units — well over twice as many as the compilation that sits further down on the ranking.
Fleetwood Mac’s Historic Chart Legacy
Between the two Fleetwood Mac albums that appear on the Billboard 200 this week, Rumours is far and away the more successful. It topped the tally a long time ago, and has spent 623 weeks somewhere on the list.
In comparison, Greatest Hits never managed to crack the top 10, stalling at No. 14. It has managed only a little more than half as many frames on the list, as it has now racked up 327 stays somewhere on the Billboard 200.
