Today, Hot Frosty completed what we call a “Golden Week” on the Netflix Top 10 charts by capturing seven consecutive days in the #1 position, making it the 21st movie to achieve the feat in 2024. Several other movies have accomplished this streak as of late, including Don’t Move, Woman of the Hour and Uglies, so it’s not necessarily anything to write home about. But there’s reason to believe this Lacey Chabert vehicle will shoot much higher and go places very few Netflix movies have gone before.
If you don’t know, the core premise of a rom-com like Hot Frosty is, well, exactly what it sounds like. This magical holiday romance centers on our protagonist Kathy, a grieving widow who accidentally brings a snowman (named Jack) to life during her small town’s snowman-building competition. And yeah: the snowman is hot. But he’s also a genuinely kind-hearted, charming gentleman who has a lot to learn about being human. As Jack and Kathy grow closer, his childlike wonder and warm spirit help Kathy rediscover love and joy just in time for Christmas—all while Jack’s frosty deadline awaits on the horizon, putting their future together at risk.
This film directed by Stephen Herek stars Lacey Chabert as Kathy and Dustin Milligan (best known from Schitt’s Creek) as Jack, the snowman-turned-human. The supporting cast includes an all-star cast of hilarious character actors, including Craig Robinson as Sheriff Nate Hunter, Joe Lo Truglio as Deputy Sheriff Schatz, Lauren Holly as Jane and Chrishell Stause in a guest role as Kathy’s diner patron, Jan.
So, as I said, it’s not necessarily a huge feat to achieve a Golden Week. Twenty-one films have done it this year, and 92 movies in total have done it since Netflix initiated the Top 10 charts back in February 2020. But only 11 movies this year have stretched that streak to eight days, while 54 in total have done it in the past four years. A nine-day streak? Seven movies have accomplished that streak this year, and only 35 in total.
But Hot Frosty has a long shot at becomning one of the few movies to reach a ten-day streak. Looking at the upcoming schedule, there likely won’t be a new contender for the #1 position until November 23, the day after Netflix’s new animated adventure film Spellbound hits the library. If Hot Frosty was able to stave off that film, then it would become just the fourth movie to hit the ten-day streak in 2024, joining Hit Man (which accomplished the feat back in June), Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (July) and The Union (August).
Here’s a full list of every movie that’s achieved a seven-day streak this year, and how many days each movie spent consecutively in the top spot:
- The Union – 10 days
- Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F – 10 days
- Hit Man – 10 days
- Atlas – 9 days
- Anyone But You – 9 days
- The Little Things – 9 days
- Irish Wish – 9 days
- Bad Boys: Ride or Die – 8 days
- The Garfield Movie – 8 days
- Rebel Ridge – 8 days
- Jack Reacher: Never Go Back – 8 days
- Hot Frosty – 7 days
- Don’t Move – 7 days
- Woman of the Hour – 7 days
- Uglies – 7 days
- The Deliverance – 7 days
- Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire – 7 days
- Trigger Warning – 7 days
- Madame Web – 7 days
- Damsel – 7 days
- The Equalizer 3 – 7 days
As you can see, ten days is a streak that some of Netflix’s biggest movies this year didn’t achieve, including Atlas, Anyone But You, The Little Things and Irish Wish. And if we limit this list purely to Netflix Originals, then only 13 movies have achieved a streak of at least seven days, and only five have made it to nine days. So if we purely observe films produced by Netflix, it seems Hot Frosty will stand as one of the streamer’s biggest accomplishments in 2024—even if the holiday rom-com loses out to Spellbound.
So does Hot Frosty have three more days left in the tank? Well, that depends upon the competition. As I said, there aren’t many major movies hitting the Netflix library between now and Friday when Spellbound becomes available. The biggest threat is another holiday rom-com, The Merry Gentlemen, which hits Netflix today and stars Chad Michael Murray and Britt Robertson. But Hot Frosty has become such a meme over the past week that it could easily hold onto the top spot for several more days. Only time will tell if Hot Frosty joins the illustrious ranks of Netflix’s most popular movies ever.
