Jessica Simpson is officially back. Years after stepping away from the music industry, the pop and reality TV icon is making a long-awaited return — and the numbers show that fans are still eager to hear from her. Her latest single, “Leave,” debuts inside the top 40 on iTunes in the U.S., proving that there’s still demand for her voice, even after an extended break.
Jessica Simpson’s “Leave” Breaks Into the Top 40
Simpson’s new song “Leave” makes an immediate and notable impact on iTunes, opening at No. 37 on the platform’s list of the bestselling songs in America. While digital downloads aren’t the powerhouse they once were, cracking the top 40 – the region that typically signifies when a charting cut becomes a hit, even a minor one – in a competitive landscape remains an impressive feat, especially for an artist who hasn’t been active in the business for quite some time.
One of the Top Debuts of the Week
This week’s batch of new releases is a busy one, with several high-profile drops making their presence felt on the iTunes rankings, as is the case every Friday. Simpson earns one of the loftiest debuts this frame, though she’s not alone in making a splash.
The top new entry of the week belongs to BTS member J-Hope and R&B star Miguel, whose collaboration “Sweet Dreams” arrives at No. 1. It’s the only fresh release to land inside the top 10.
Elsewhere, rock band Volbeat’s “Buy a Monster’s Hand” and country singer Charlie Crockett’s “Jamestown Ferry” also enter the top 40, though they come in far behind of J-Hope, and well ahead of Simpson.
Simpson’s Second Release of the Year
“Leave” isn’t Simpson’s first new song of 2025. Earlier this year, she shared “Use My Heart Against Me,” a track that began this quiet comeback after more than a decade of relative musical silence. While that song didn’t make much of a commercial splash, it served as something of a reintroduction, paving the way for her latest single to gain traction.
A New Project Is Coming
Both “Leave” and “Use My Heart Against Me” will feature on Simpson’s upcoming release Nashville Canyon Part One. The project, which is expected to arrive later this year, is her first collection of music in 15 years.
Her last album, Happy Christmas, dropped in 2010, but it’s been even longer since she last put out a non-holiday full-length. Do You Know, her 2008 country-leaning album, saw her step away from pop and into a different musical space.
Jessica Simpson’s History With Country Music
Simpson has tried her hand at country before, though her first foray into the genre received mixed results. Her 2008 album Do You Know debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and ruled the Top Country Albums chart, earning a strong start. The project’s lead single, “Come On Over,” stalled at No. 65 on the Hot 100, and the set’s overall performance didn’t quite match the success of her earlier pop-driven releases.
More Than a Decade Away From Music
In the years since her last proper album, Simpson has largely focused on other ventures. She built a billion-dollar fashion empire, expanded into homewares, released a bestselling memoir, and has seemingly spent much of her time raising her three children. While she has occasionally hinted at a return to music, nothing ever materialized — until now.
