Lady Gaga has done it again. The pop superstar’s brand new album Mayhem has been out for less than a day, and it is already dominating sales charts worldwide. In the U.S., the set becomes an immediate bestseller, soaring straight to No. 1 on iTunes, proving once again that Gaga’s devoted fan base shows up whenever she releases new music – especially if it will get them dancing.
Friday, March 7, marks the beginning of a new tracking week in the music industry, meaning fresh releases flood platforms like iTunes. While many albums arrive, Mayhem wastes no time pulling ahead. The project easily claims the top spot on iTunes’ ranking of the bestselling albums in America, outpacing every other new release this week.
Lady Gaga Outsells Other High-Profile Releases
Gaga’s latest effort doesn’t just rule iTunes — it does so against some serious competition. Several other new albums debut inside the top 10 on the platform and make a play for the highest space, including major releases from various genres.
At the time of writing, the entire top four consists of fresh entries. Mayhem leads the charge, while Spiritbox’s Tsunami Sea follows at No. 2. K-pop star Jennie of Blackpink arrives at No. 3 with Ruby, and Americana favorite Jason Isbell lands at No. 4 with Foxes in the Snow.
Further down inside the top 10, more notable debuts appear. Controversial Tory Lanez’s Peterson sits at No. 6, while Whitechapel’s Hymns in Dissonance enters at No. 8. Christian artist TobyMac rounds out the region at No. 10 with Heaven on My Mind, as multiple other new titles continue climbing just outside the highest tier.
Gaga Claims Multiple Spots on the iTunes Songs Chart
While Mayhem dominates the albums chart, the title’s new songs are having a slower start on iTunes’ singles ranking — at least for now. None of the tracks that debut today break into the top 10, but Gaga is still well-represented on the tally.
Her collaboration with Bruno Mars, “Die With a Smile,” holds steady at No. 2, proving its staying power. The latest official Mayhem single, “Abracadabra,” enjoys a notable jump to No. 4, showing early signs of renewed commercial strength. Meanwhile, “Disease,” one of the first dance-pop cuts from the album, surges back into the region, landing at No. 10.
A Comeback After Harlequin’s Underperformance
Mayhem marks Gaga’s first solo album since last year’s Harlequin, but the two projects are experiencing very different receptions. That previous release was tied to Joker: Folie à Deux, and while it was a solid seller, it failed to match the blockbuster success of her past efforts. It wasn’t necessarily a flop, as it wasn’t expected to churn out massive singles, but for an artist of Gaga’s caliber, it certainly didn’t leave the same impact as her biggest albums.
Mayhem Brings Gaga Back to Her Dance-Pop Roots
With Mayhem, Gaga returns to the sound that makes her a household name. The album marks her first full-length dance-pop collection in nearly five years, following 2020’s Chromatica.
Gaga first exploded onto the scene with The Fame and The Fame Monster, packed with electro-pop anthems like “Just Dance,” “Poker Face,” and “Bad Romance.” She built on that momentum with Born This Way, an album that cemented her status as one of pop music’s most daring and influential artists. After several genre experiments, including jazz, country, and soundtrack work, Mayhem finds Gaga fully embracing her dance-pop roots once again.
