Amid a whirlwind year involving top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, two Grammy Awards, and an ongoing world tour, Sabrina Carpenter isn’t taking a break from releasing new music. The “Espresso” hitmaker has once again teamed up with star producer Jack Antonoff for a new single, “Manchild,” out now.
“Man-child / Why you always come a-running to me? / F**k my life / Won’t you let an innocent woman be? / Never heard of self-care / Half your brain just ain’t there / Man-child / Why you always come a-running, taking all my loving from me?” she sings on the lighthearted pop track.
Carpenter continues to ride the high of her breakout album Short n’ Sweet. Though it marked the former Disney Channel star’s sixth studio album, she told Vogue in a March cover story that she considers her 2022 album Emails I Can’t Send, her first with Island Records, as her “first big-girl album.”
On last year’s follow-up, Carpenter stepped into her own, unafraid of appearing crass or saying the wrong thing in public. Now, the artist that people see is the same person behind the scenes.
“Short n’ Sweet is absolutely me,” she said. “There’s no, like, alter ego. But it’s definitely a more emphasized version of me. It’s interesting because I’m able to dress in this way where you would kind of expect to hear like a voice from the ’60s. But then, when I’m speaking to the audience, I’m just myself.”
The change came naturally to her in the album creation process as she knew she had to keep true to herself while recording.
“I had a lot of ideas musically, and for the one thing that pulls it all together to be my point of view,” she said. “That was the one thing that I knew.”
The Short n’ Sweet Tour wraps up Nov. 23 in Los Angeles.
