In just one morning, the Seattle Seahawks jumpstarted their 2025 offseason by moving on from two long-time pillars of its passing game.
The Seahawks released wide receiver Tyler Lockett ahead of the new year and have agreed to DK Metcalf’s trade request. Both transactions happened in the span of an hour and accelerated a semi-reset for the offense under second-year head coach Mike Macdonald.
Lockett’s release from the team was always imminent. In his 10th and final year with Seattle, the 32-year-old registered career-lows in catches (49), receiving yards (600) and had his second-lowest receiving yards per game (35.3).
The Kansas State standout did finish his decorated tenure with the Seahawks as one of its most accomplished wide receivers. He stands second all-time behind Hall of Famer Steve Largent in career receiving yardage (8,594), receiving touchdowns (61) and receptions (661) with the franchise.
Metcalf is somewhat of a different story.
At 27-years-old, the two-time Pro Bowler is in the prime of his career and entering the final year of his three-year $72 million contract. With the team just missing the playoffs last year and another payday looming, time was of the essence for Metcalf.
Seattle is amidst a roster retool in an attempt to put themselves in favorable salary cap standing. With a potential Geno Smith contract extension down the pipeline, Seattle was stretched a bit too thin to add Metcalf’s looming contract extension to their books.
Last year was an injury-riddled campaign for the former second-round selection. He missed two games for the first time in his career due to an MCL sprain and had just 108 targets which were his lowest since his rookie year.
Now back on the market, Metcalf has a desire to get paid and compete with a title contender. Conflicting reports spoke on the Green Bay Packers having interests around Metcalf while Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed said that the New England Patriots have “kicked the tires” on a potential Metcalf trade.
