Percy Jackson and the Olympians was the most-watched Disney Plus show of 2024, after it premiered on December 19, 2023. We do have a new update about when season 2 of the series will arrive, with a possible release date/window, but it’s not great.
The good news is that it’s just been announced that Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 has just wrapped filming. The disappointing news is what that means for its eventual release date given the gap between filming and release we saw previously. Here’s what I mean:
- Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 wrapped on February 2, 2023, after shooting for eight months starting in June 2022.
- The show did not end up premiering until a full 10 months later, on December 19, 2023.
- So, if filming is wrapped today, February 2 (wow, same day even?) that puts the potential release date, well, maybe at December 19, 2025, or at least somewhat close to that. That said, it’s a full eleven months away, which is no doubt longer than fans want to wait.
That would be a two year gap between seasons of the show which is…okay, I guess, in the current streaming era. It’s certainly not ideal as we used to get most shows every year, but the way things work now with these bigger budget series is that 1.5-2 years is pretty standard. At least it’s not like some of the higher profile Netflix productions that have taken 3+ years to get here (looking at you, Stranger Things season 5).
One reason that this is only two years and not longer is because this all happened outside of the Writer’s Strike, which ran from May 2023 to September 2023, which is when season 1 had wrapped filming and it was all just in post-production, no writing required. And season 2 writing, filming and now post-production is taking place well after all that happened.
Percy Jackson season 1 outperformed every single Marvel and Star Wars show on Disney Plus last year, which is very impressive. The list was as follows:
- Percy Jackson and the Olympians – 3 million minutes watched
- The Acolyte – 2.6 million
- Agatha All Along – 2.2 million
- Echo – 1.5 million
- X-Men ’97 – 1.4 million
- Star Wars: The Bad Batch – 923K
- Star Wars: Skeleton Crew – 914K
- Ahsoka – 841K
- The Mandalorian season 3 – 811K
- The Mandalorian season 1 – 693K
Honestly pretty impressive for The Mandalorian given that season 1 aired back in 2019. But also great for Percy Jackson, as you can see. If it tops the list again, that would be for 2026, not 2025, unless release is earlier than we think. But it’s not all that far away, I suppose.
