Captain America: Brave New World is looking to top the weekend box office in its second weekend of release, but the horror comedy The Monkey is making noise in its debut.
Per Deadline, Disney Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World is projected to hold on to the top spot at the weekend box office with an estimated domestic take of $28.1 million. Despite the No. 1 hold, however, Deadline noted business for Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford’s Marvel Cinematic Universe action-adventure has dropped 68% in business in its second weekend.
Captain America: Brave New World is playing in 4,105 North American theaters. Should the estimate hold, it will boost the latest MCU chapter’s domestic tally to $141.7 million.
Meanwhile, Deadline projects that indie studio Neon’s The Monkey will earn $13.5 million to $14 million from 3,200 North American venues this weekend.
The Monkey is writer-director Osgood Perkins’ second horror film released by Neon in the past seven months.
Per the trade publication, Perkins’ Longlegs had a record opening of $22.4 million for Neon when the smash horror thriller opened in theaters in July. If Deadline’s projection holds, The Monkey will become the second-largest opening for the indie studio.
According to Variety, The Monkey had a production budget of $10 million before prints and advertising costs.
Paddinginton In Peru Aiming For No. 3 Spot At Weekend Box Office
Sony Pictures Entertainment is projecting its family movie Paddington in Peru will take in $6.5 million from 3,890 North American theaters this weekend for a third-place finish at the weekend domestic box office. Should Sony’s estimate hold, it will up the film’s domestic tally to $25.2 million.
Deadline projects that Universal Pictures/DreamWorks animated comedy Dog Man will take the No. 4 spot at this weekend’s domestic box office with an estimated $5.7 million in ticket sales from 3,179 locations. Dog Man’s hold in the top five at the domestic box office comes amid the quick release of the film on digital streaming last Tuesday.
Sony projects that its Valentine-themed horror thriller Heart Eyes will make $3 million from 3,003 locations through Sunday to up its domestic tally to $26.9 million.
Deadline also projects that the weekend’s other new wide theatrical release—Lionsgate’s family drama The Unbreakable Boy—will earn $2.1 million to $2.4 million from 1,736 theaters for a No. 9 finish.
Note: This box office report will be updated throughout the weekend with the most recent domestic and international numbers as they become available. The final numbers for this weekend’s box office will be released on Monday.
