Moana 2 splashed into theaters on Nov. 27, and viewers are already eager to know when the animated prequel will be available on Disney+. Here’s what you need to know about when you might be able to watch Moana 2 from the comfort of your home.
As a sequel to the beloved 2016 hit Moana, the movie follows Moana and Maui as they reunite for a new adventure with a crew of unlikely seafarers. According to Disney’s official synopsis, “After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
The voice cast features Auliʻi Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Rachel House, and Alan Tudyk, all of whom are reprising their roles from the first installment. Newcomers to the cast include Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, Rose Matafeo, David Fane, Hualālai Chung, Awhimai Fraser, and Gerald Ramsey.
Originally, Moana 2 was planned as a limited streaming series for Disney+, but Disney decided to reformat it into a theatrical sequel. This decision was officially announced in February 2024 by Disney CEO Bob Iger. During an earnings call, Iger said that Moana recently surpassed 1 billion hours of streaming on Disney+ and became the most-streamed movie of 2023 on any platform in the U.S.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, directors David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller recently discussed their approach to creating a sequel for one of Disney’s biggest animated films.
“It’s been eight years since the first film, and technology has changed — which has helped us have an even bigger scope. The water and the hair in Moana were iconic new additions to the animation world. It’s only gotten better since then,” Ledoux Miller explained. “I’m so excited for everyone to just see the rich lushness of this world again, but also to just step back into Moana’s world to go on a new adventure. We don’t let her off the hook for anything. So it’s really exciting, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.
